Artist Statement
There is a unique way that Black folks exist in Memphis—a particular way we show love, congregate, express ourselves,.....even sit still. The people here hold close to them what the world has left behind and forgotten, all while embodying what everyone else seems to be constantly running from. Always misunderstood, under-resourced, overlooked, underpaid, overworked, last to be picked. Memphis is too often portrayed through a narrow lens of violence and poverty. While violence exists everywhere, it reflects deeper aspects of humanity, reminding us of our power to choose our path. Our essence here lies in our resilience and community. I hope that my work serves as documentation that uplifts all those who nourish and pour love into this land. Their stories and mine carry with them proof of life—proof that we are here.
